Since founding Professional Tutoring in 1994, Julia Ross has dedicated her life to children’s education. Under Julia’s leadership, Professional Tutoring has grown to support hundreds of students each week in academic tutoring, test preparation, college admissions coaching and student support. Julia is a well-known lecturer and member of several national college admission organizations including IECA, HECA, NACAC and AACRAO. Outside of business, Julia and her family have hosted 100 international students including Children of Chernobyl, British soccer coaches, au pairs, exchange students, and foster children.

A graduate of George Mason University, Rachel studied Chinese through the State Department Flagship Language Program and at the University of Qingdao and Minzu University in China. Since joining Professional Tutoring in 2016, Rachel has brought excellence to the organization through her agile and creative mind. Rachel tutors the following subjects through the college level: Chinese, Spanish, math, calculus, statistics, physics, English and history. She leads the Professional Tutoring SAT and ACT program with excellence and provides superb service to our College Coaching clients.

A historian at heart, Matt Dischner studied English and Medieval Studies at the University of Virginia. While at UVA, he studied abroad at Oxford University in England. Matt went on to earn a master’s degree from the prestigious New York University John W. Draper Program. After graduation, Matt developed the Smithsonian’s Freer|Sackler Galleries first digital exhibit. He is also an avid poet, with his work regularly appearing in the literary journal, Caustic Frolic. Mr. Dischner is an integral part of the Professional Tutoring College Coaching and academic teams.

Linda manages all of Professional Tutoring’s administrative, financial and operational systems thereby allowing the core business to thrive. In her 30+ years of experience, many as an entrepreneur, Linda has worked in industries ranging from non-profits and government entities to privately-held technology-based companies and service firms. Linda has professional proficiency in French and Italian and basic skills in Arabic. In her leisure time, she sings with the Vienna Choral Society, experiments with international cooking, and strives to understand world events.

A Fairfax County native (Robinson H.S.), Emma graduated from the State Department Arabic Flagship Language Program at the University of Mississippi in 2016 with a double major in Arabic and Spanish and a minor in French. While at Ole Miss, Emma studied abroad at the University of Irbid, Jordan, and at the University of Cadiz, Spain. Emma tutors biology, chemistry, Spanish, French, Arabic, history, English and SAT/ACT preparation. Emma also supports the Professional Tutoring College Coaching program in workshops, essay and resume development and editing.

As a lawyer at the FCC, Cathy Withers spent many years working with the public, addressing and resolving concerns. After sending her older son through the Professional Tutoring SAT/ACT and College Coaching programs, Cathy decided to join the Professional Tutoring staff. As the Professional Tutoring Academic Coach, Cathy uses her strong project management, problem-solving and ADHD/executive functioning coaching training to support college students. She is committed to working with teens and believes that every child should be empowered to succeed to reach their full potential.

A Professional Tutoring alumna, Sara graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in 2020 with a major in political science and minors in history and national security studies. Sara works with our younger students in math, Spanish, and English and supports our College Coaching workshops.
SAT/ACT Class Assistants
Our eight Professional Tutoring interns are local high school juniors and seniors who have completed our six or nine-month SAT/ACT preparation programs. They provide support to our current prep classes by leading small groups in going over exam material, checking homework, scoring multiple-choice quizzes, and assisting in proctoring practice exams. Our office intern supports business activities once per week as s/he prepares to study business in college. Our tutoring intern supports the learning of elementary school students in our tutoring program.
