High School Coaching: Initial Consultation

Who is this for?  Who is this for? The Initial Consultation (IC) prepares families for a fruitful and rewarding secondary school experience. This program develops a solid secondary school plan for high school success and college admissions. In the IC, Professional Tutoring staff evaluates a student’s strengths and weaknesses, discusses high school and college goals, and professional possibilities. In addition, our experienced college coach will discuss and direct a student’s high school academic choices, extra-curricular activities, athletics, leadership, and community service. 

 

Up to 1.5-2.0 Hours. Client Deliverables generally include:

 

  • Initial phone call with parent(s) to discuss the student’s educational history and the family goals.

  • A 1.5-hour meeting with students and parent(s) to learn about the student, including educational strengths and weaknesses, subject preferences, activities, college and, ultimately, professional goals, as well as family preferences and goals. A 45-minute consultation is included in the Academic Planning and Resume Program and the High School Admissions Program.

  • Analysis of student’s transcript, scores (State Exams, SSAT, HSPT, PSAT, SAT and/or ACT).

  • Explanation, evaluation, and planning of secondary school course rigor.

  • Specific secondary school course selection, including AP/IB/Honors choices.

  • PSAT, SAT, ACT planning and timeline.

  • Evaluation of the student’s academic, social and athletic involvement and potential.

  • Evaluation of extra-curricular activities, community service, and leadership, including important opportunities such as Governor’s School, Summer Programs, Eagle Scout Award, Gold Award, Girls and Boys State, People-to-People and study abroad.

  • Evaluation of academic, activity, leadership and service cohesion.

  • Review and tutorial of the college admissions process.

  • College admissions probability calculation.

  • Specific recommendations to increase college admissions probability.

  • Discussion of college costs, merit scholarships, and financial aid.

  • List of colleges for initial research and evaluation by the student and family.

  • Advice for working with school guidance department.

  • Professional Tutoring checklist.

 

Advantages: In the IC, parents and students receive expert advice from an experienced college coach.  In the IC, the coach works collaboratively with the student and his/her family to develop a potential course schedule and timeline to create a clear and cohesive path through secondary school into college.

 

Program Length:                 1.5 hours of service during the IC meeting. Included in the APRP and the HSAP packages.

 

Optimal Start Time:           6th grade to the first semester of 11th grade.
