The College Coaching Process – How we can help

Choosing your School

The transition from high school to college is not clear cut; there is no one correct route. Variables include not only high school classes, grades, SAT/ACT scores and extra-curricular activities, but personalities, abilities, and the parents’ financial situation. With over 4,000 colleges and universities in the United States offering millions of dollars in scholarship money yearly, the possibilities become seemingly endless. At Professional Tutoring, the daunting selection process is narrowed down to an optimal number of colleges selected specifically to fit your student’s needs. We address the student as an individual with unique interests, talents, and developmental opportunities to ensure the best college fit with the greatest potential scholarships.

Applying to Schools

At Professional Tutoring, we help you streamline the application process into achievable steps with attainable goals and deadlines. We work with students to develop a cohesive admissions marketing package, highlighting their strengths and passions, identifying weaknesses and guiding students and families to strengthen them. We will guide your student through writing that first essay, drafting a student resume, preparing for college visits and interviews, etc., ensuring high-quality results that maintain the student’s authenticity. Your student will come across as competent, fully prepared and entirely themselves – not “coached.”

Paying for School - Scholarships and more

As parents of college students, we know the financial burden college can demand. We will explore opportunities for merit scholarships and grant money with you, helping you and your student maximize their chances for receiving scholarships. Many students, even with an average GPA, can uncover some scholarship money. The money earned in scholarships can be the equivalent of paying for coaching services many times over! We understand that education is an investment in your student’s future and we have the experience, dedication, and resources to ensure you receive maximum returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we need College Coaching?

College is a major life transition for teenagers as well as their parents. There are many variables that come into play, the vast number of schools, the exams and applications, tuition and of course the students themselves. With over 25 years of experience and a nationally published resource, Professional Tutoring’s College Coaching program can guide students as well as the parents through this transition optimizing options while catering to the student’s needs.

Isn’t College Coaching only for high achieving students going to Ivy League or big name universities?

No! The goal of college coaching is to set up your student, no matter what kind of student they are, to achieve success in the college that is going to be the best fit for them.

Can you guarantee my child will get into college?

All of the students that have successfully completed our college coaching program(s) have been accepted to a college or university. While this is not a guarantee, we are very proud of our success rate! In 2020, 100% of our students were accepted into college. Our students submitted 286 applications to colleges and had a 79% acceptance rate.

My child does not test well (SAT/ACT), will this program help?

There are no “perfect” students. We work with the student to maximize their strengths and coach options for developmental opportunities. In addition, we encourage you to check out our SAT/ACT programs.

My child does not have the best grades, can this program help?

Definitely! Most of our students do not have perfect GPAs. We work with the student to maximize their strengths and coach options for developmental opportunities.

Should we apply to public in-state schools only?

College Coaching will assist you in selecting the schools that are the best fit for your student. All aspects are taken into consideration: majors, tuition, the school’s reputation as well as location. Often times out-of-state schools are comparable to the in-state schools, especially once available scholarship money is factored in.

Am I too late to apply?

If you are contacting us before the college application deadlines, then you are not too late. Application deadlines vary from as early as October 15 for extremely competitive programs and extend until August 1 in some cases. College application deadlines are specific to each institution.

Are parents included in this process?

Parents are involved by attending the Initial Consultation meeting with their child, attending certain workshops and assisting their child by reviewing much of their material.

My child has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), is this program right for him/her?

Our hands-on and one-on-one approach are very beneficial to students with ADD.

My child is Learning Disabled (LD), is this program right for him/her?

Many students with learning disabilities, including students with Asperger’s Syndrome, have benefited from our program. We discuss each case with parents ahead of time to make sure that we will be the right match.

Do you take out-of-state students?

Yes, we have several students who are not local to the Northern Virginia area; these include DOD/Military and State Department students as well as clients who find us through word-of-mouth or the Internet.

Do I have to commit to a specific program now?

No, but space is limited and our slots tend to fill up very quickly, so if you are considering purchasing a package we recommend that you do so as soon as possible. If you need help selecting the best package for your family’s and student’s needs, please contact us by email or call for a free 15-minute phone consultation.
